Welcome!
Well this is the start for all you Youth Councillors out there to have your views heard.
As we approach our 2009 elections – next week – I always get slightly excited about who will apply and, more importantly, who will be successful and be elected onto the Council.
We have a very busy year ahead of us with a return visit of our friends from Waldkirch in Germany in October half term, and a possible trip to Germany for a ‘Respect/Tolerance’ conferenece in August/September time.
We have some work to do with the adult councillors to ensure that the ice rink will not just be something we had and don’t anymore… somewhere in the region of 70% of young people who responded to our recent consultation said they would like Worthing to have a rink, and I think that the numbers of users during February proved that it was a highly popular activity for young and old alike.
As a Youth Council we need to ensure that the shadow cabinet members are on top of their responsibilities and we don’t let this job slip. We need also to make sure we are represented on all Neighbourhood Community Panels.
The Community Engagement Task Force has now begun its work and it seems that we need to have a peer mentor helping the Youth Councillors get a grip on the jargon which is used at these meetings – I have also contacted the Adur Youth Forum to ensure this group of young people have a vioce in this very important arena as it has been decided by the adults that this will be one of the joint ventures for the 2 districts.
We are to try something new this year, focus group meetings and preparation for meetings can now be done after the main meeting on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month, giving you time when you are already out and about rather than having to turn out on yet another evening, especially during the winter months.
Don’t forget the young person’s celebration event this coming Saturday, all welcome, free food – has to be a winner – and you should get certificates but you must let me know you will be there…. The Glynn Owen Centre 14th March 2009 6pm – 8pm and we will finish with a live band! Not to be missed!
